Set within a graceful oval cartouche bordered by a rich cobalt blue and coral-red frame, this exquisite composition shows Krishna, his blue-skinned form draped in Radha's vibrant orange skirt, standing tenderly beside Radha, who wears his signature yellow pitambar and ornate crown. The crescent moon floats amid swirling clouds above, while lush kadamba trees flank the lovers on a verdant hillock — every element steeped in the poetry of Shringar Rasa. The speckled salmon-pink border with floral corner cartouches is a hallmark of the refined Kangra-Guler Pahari tradition, dating to the late 18th century.
This composition belongs to the celebrated Pahari school of miniature painting, which flourished in the hill courts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu. Inspired by Jayadeva's Gita Govinda and the Bhagavata Purana, Pahari artists elevated Radha-Krishna imagery to the pinnacle of Indian visual poetry.
