Description

Hiroshi Yoshida's Village Gathering in India — a masterful vintage woodblock print capturing the vibrant soul of Rajasthani community life. Bring the warmth, colour, and timeless spirit of an Indian village square into your home with this stunning museum-quality reproduction.

This celebrated woodblock print depicts a lively gathering of villagers seated beneath the shade of a grand banyan tree, their colourful turbans — saffron, crimson, teal, white, and pink — punctuating a sun-drenched sandy courtyard. Behind them, arched Rajasthani architecture rises in soft blue-white tones, while camels stand patiently in the background, hinting at the bustle of a market town. Yoshida's signature technique blends the precision of Japanese ukiyo-e printmaking with an Impressionist's eye for Indian light, creating a composition that feels both documentary and deeply poetic. The warm ochre ground, the cool blue shadows on white-washed walls, and the rich tapestry of fabrics give this print an extraordinary depth of colour and atmosphere.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement. His travels through India in the 1930s produced a remarkable series of woodblock prints that remain among the most sensitive and admired artistic depictions of the subcontinent by any international artist. This particular work is prized by collectors worldwide for its masterful crowd composition and luminous Rajasthani light.
